Which Apology Language Is Best for Your Relationship?

In Episode 109 of A Matchmaker’s Guide to Love and Life, I dive into a surprisingly overlooked, yet deeply important topic: apologies. Not just saying sorry, but learning to apologize in a way that truly lands with the person you care about.

Because here’s the truth:
You could say “I’m sorry” a hundred times… and still leave the other person feeling unseen, unheard, or worse—unloved.

Why Your Apology Might Not Be Working

Sometimes, it’s not the apology that’s the problem—it’s the language you’re using.

In this episode, I shared a personal story about a moment in my marriage when I received an apology that didn’t feel sincere. Not because it lacked love—but because it didn’t match my apology language.

Just like love languages, apology languages help you understand how your partner receives emotional repair.

Based on the work of Gary Chapman, I walk through the 5 Apology Languages that help restore connection and rebuild trust:

Expressing Regret-  “I’m sorry for what I did.”

Accepting Responsibility-  “I was wrong.”

Making Restitution-  “How can I make it right?”

Planning Change- “I’ll take steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Requesting Forgiveness-  “Will you forgive me?”

Emotional maturity means being the first to apologize, even if it’s awkward, even if your ego resists.
Why? Because connection matters more than “being right.” And if you’ve ever been on the receiving end of an apology that didn’t land—you know how deeply that can affect your trust and sense of safety.

You might think you’re apologizing…
But are you doing it in a way the other person can receive?

Katy’s advice is simple and powerful:

“Speak their apology language—not yours.”

When you learn to repair with empathy and awareness, you don’t just resolve conflict—you deepen connection.
